MIFF Day 5: The Media Is the Message

The McLuhan Festival is spinning off with the speed of information distribution.

The conclusion of the whole day of discussions: we create a medium for a purpose to distribute a message that this is the end of the medium.

There were lectures and presentations about:
* unprecedented opportunities of tomorrow’s new media culture and the end of IT revolution;
* revolutionary changes in media technology and the rise of an artistic global culture with a special Canadian place in this process;
* allowing the Internet and democracy to become webocracy and creating new aristocracy;
* the patterns in the media chaos: the cable channel as distribution medium for peer-produced content and a person as a virtual broadcast corporation (a producer, an advertiser and a viewer).

I believe that on Sunday, on the Internet Day we will discuss a topic of the death of the Internet. Even today there was an opinion do not use a PC because it controls a person'’s life (sounds Orwellian).

Learning the lesson of the day we are adding a new feature to our blog structure: ADS - advertisements (smells parties, complimentary food and handy goodies).

* революционных изменениях в технологии СМИ и повышении артистической глобальной культуры с особым местом Канады в этом процессе;
* сплаве Интернета и демократии, чтобы стать вэбократией и созданием новой аристократии;
* новых структурах в хаосе СМИ: кабельный канал как среда распространения содержания и человека как целой корпорации: производителя, рекламодателя и зрителя.

Я полагаю, что в воскресенье, в Интернет-день мы обсудим тему затухания Интернета.

Даже при том, что уже сегодня было мнение не использовать ПК, потому что он является средством контроля (звучит как Оруэлл).

Делая выводы из прошедшего дня, мы решили добавить новую рубрику к нашему блогу: ОБЪЯВЛЕНИЯ - рекламные объявления (чувствуется запах угощений , неформальных встреч и маленьких сувениров).

I read it only after your blog paid attention to the Media column. I read it in both formats: a magazine and an on-line version. We even set up a content-analysis of the "Blog's Age" which shows that blogs are about time but magazines are about money. Show me the money, Baby!
Will I still subscribe on the Toronto Life magazine? Yes, I will. Will I read BlogTO? Yes, I will. They compliment each other. Journalists are posting blogs, bloggers are writing articles. Maybe next year during the third McLuhan Festival bloggers should set up a special section "Blog's Age" or/and an interactive event "I blog TO"?"

The Weekend Well Wasted (WWW)
I wish I could follow "not a day without a line"...
But either you live or you write. This weekend we did a half-and-half.
On Saturday we went to the Prince Edward County to enjoy one of the last days of summer, to buy some local vegetables and eat at one of new fancy places that claim their part of culinary fame from Toronto heavy weights. Two hours there and two hours back, not mentioning that I was doing 140 km/h. Traffic was so good at $1.045 per gallon, what is going to happen after $2.00?
Spent a couple of hours at the Sandbanks Provincial Park almost no people and the sank is so white, so microscopic, Picton, Bloomfield, Carrying Place.
At the Milford Bistro which was closed at that time we spoke with Michael Potter, the chef and owner who recommended to go to Bloomfield to the Carriage House and he took a reservation for our next visit.
The Carriage House was a terrific and price-wise deal. Exquisite! It is scary to imagine what you have to pay for this meal in Toronto.
We also bought some vegetables at the Kleinburg farm and by 9:45 PM we were at home.
Today it was the Word on Street event. So much maculature ('junk' from Latin), a lot of people and too few books that I would like to buy. Two of them are Leo Panitch's "Socializm Revival" and "Malevitch and Film" by Margarita Tupitsyn.

From TIFF to MIFF using SWA

A deep semantic web analysis (SWA) of two subjects: the Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF) and McLuhan International Festival of Future (MIFF) shows significant correlation (+0.8) between them. The link is William Marshall & Co. They are the medium.
We are still preparing our review of the rest of the film festival, and tomorrow we are ready to start to volunteer for the MIFF. How do you do?

It's Day 7 already. Can you believe it? Only three more days and things will begin winding down, but before we even think about that there are a number of last minute opportunities popping up. Check out the new postings below! (Preference for adding these shifts will go to volunteers who have already registered and need only 1 or 2 more shifts to meet the 4-shift requirement and qualify for a party ticket.)

We still need a few good volunteers (about 40 of them) at Roy Thomson Hall on September 17th from 12:30pm to 7:00pm. If you would like to add this shift or other RTH shifts, please email Anja Capel for details —> acapel@torfilmfest.ca

We also need more volunteers at the Varsity in the mornings. If you are available to work a morning shift at the Varsity (7:15am to 1:45pm) on any of the remaining days of the Festival, please email Dan Williamson at dwilliamson@torfilmfest.ca

Дорога, Которой Редко Ходят

... Я провел первые три дня фестиваля, посещая те фильмы, которые, возможно, не попадут под радар. И сегодня, наконец, я попал в точку. Избегая журавлей в небе и предпочитая иметь синиц в руках, я не нашел что – нибудь подходящего, чтобы тронуло меня или привлекло внимание как материал для подготовки будущих программ.

Пока только один фильм действительно очаровал меня; это фильм Филипа Гроенинга «В Великом Безмолвии», трех часовое исследование ритуалов ежедневной жизни в монастыре Большой Шартрез около Гренобля, Франция. Монахи приняли присягу молчания, так что само собой разумеется (и тут нет игры слов) в фильме очень мало диалогов. Вместо этого в большом количестве звуки монашеской жизни; звоны колоколов, скрипение половиц, провторения молитв, и звуки костров, потрескивающих в небольших алюминиевых печках.
Фильм прекрасно передает ритм и повторение ежедневных забот монахов, и не пытаясь копаться в их психологии. Мы никогда не узнаем, почему они выбрали монашескую жизнь, каковы их мнения о религиозной жизни, как монахи относятся друг к другу вне их молитв и обязанностей. Вместо этого мы просто углубляемся в их среду, и камера Гроенинга хорошо подходит для этой задачи, двигаясь между ярким светом и блеклой темнотой, приближая лица монахов и показывая средним планом их деятельность, а также красивые панорамные виды монастыря и глубоко сфокусированные виды его интерьеров.

Гроенинг схватывает этот ритм ежедневных обязанностей, следуя за его динамикой при редактировании фильма, и после первого часа наедине с абсолютной тишиной на экране, я оказался полностью поглощенным в мои собственные мысли; анализируя мои мысли об образах, о порядке в ежедневной жизненной рутине, о проблемах религиозной посвященности. Вы могли слышать каждый звук в кинотеатре, и я не думаю, что я преувеличиваю, говоря, что зал стал продолжением монастыря: каждый шелест обертки шоколада, каждый кашель, звук включающегося и выключающегося кондиционера, беседа в кинобудке; мир кинотеатра буквально разделил физическое пространство с спроектированным пространством монастыря на экране. Базен возможно бы плакал.

Честно говоря, я вообще не хотел диалогов. Это фильм, который дает зрителю полную свободу быть вовлеченными в образы и придать им собственные смыслы , давая и пространство и время для размышлений. Да, но есть и моменты диалога:
монахи молятся и поют, по воскресеньям им они едят за общим столом и потом прогуливаются вместе за пределами монастыря. Эти сцены дарят нам два лучших момента фильма; когда монахи наконец общаются, они обсуждают проблему полезности мытья рук. В другом эпизоде в великолепном общем плане мы видим группу монахов катающихся по склону Альпийских гор.

Я нашел, что этот фильм выделяется от других неигровых фильмов, которые очень стараются спрессовывать историю о жизни и реальную жизнь, и он блаженное облегчение после просмотра большинства фильмов, которые я пока посмотрел в течении ТМКФ.
После просмотра фильма «В Великом Безмолвии», фильм «Дневник Сельского Священника» показался мне таким же динамичным как и «Убить Билла -1», и спокойствие пришло ко мне также, как и страстное желание замедлить мою собственную жизнь, дисциплинировать себя, чтобы ценить сосредоточенную концентрацию, и стремление устоновить мои собственные ритуалы, когда я вернусь домой.
После нескольких дней посредственных историй на экране, кто бы мог подумать, что лучшим средством от них будет никакой истории вообще?

Фильм известного российского режиссера Александра Сокурова "Солнце" включен в конкурсную программу юбилейного 30-го Торонтского международного кинофестиваля. Об этом говорится в пресс-релизе дирекции престижного киносмотра, поступившем в среду в ИТАР-ТАСС.
Фильм "Солнце" заявлен в номинации "Мастера" наряду с лентами таких режиссеров, как Мартин Скорсезе, Ларс фон Триер и Стивен Содерберг. Картина, посвящённая японскому императору Хирохито, является продолжением тетралогии о великих исторических личностях ушедшего столетия, начатой Сокуровым в 1999 году фильмом "Молох", посвященным Гитлеру, и продолженная вторым фильмом — "Телец", о Ленине. Бюджет картины составил 2,5 миллиона долларов, из них 45% — средства, выделенные Федеральным агентством по культуре и кинематографии РФ.

Кинофестиваль в Торонто, стоящий, согласно рейтингу Международной ассоциации кинопродюсеров, в одном ряду с фестивалями в Каннах, Берлине и Венеции, пройдет с 8 по 17 сентября. В нем примут участие 335 фильмов из 52 стран.

На юбилейный фестиваль ожидается приезд Энтони Хопкинса, Моргана Фримэна, Гвинет Пэлтроу, Романа Полански, Пирса Броснана, Томми Ли Джонса и Гая Ричи.

В ходе киносмотра состоится 109 мировых премьер. В одной из номинаций будут также представлен российско-американский фильм "Виктория Гамбург".

Фильм Александра Сокурова "Солнце" участвует в конкурсе юбилейного 30-го международного кинофестиваля в Торонто, который открывается 8 сентября. Канадский кинофорум считается одним из крупнейших в Северной Америке и мире, отмечает Reuters.

Фильм российского режиссера об императоре Японии Хирохито будет состязаться в программе "Мастер" с картинами Стивена Содеберга, Мартина Скорсезе, Ларса фон Триера, братьев Дарденнов (каннских лауреатов 2005 года), Терри Гиллиама. Энга Ли и другими.

Еще один отечественный фильм, "Космос как предчувствие" Алексея Учителя покажут в программе современного мирового кинематографа.

Сегодня в Торонто стартовал юбилейный 30-й международный кинофестиваль. Фестиваль в Торонто считается одним из четырех важнейших кинофорумов в мире и одним из самых влиятельных. Он знаменит своей панорамой независимого кино, сравнимой только с фестивалем «Сандэнс». Наград на этом фестивале не дают, но попасть в программу Торонтского феста уже честь, потому что именно он открывает европейским и азиатским картинам путь в кинотеатры Северной Америки. С фестиваля в Торонто начинается оскаровская гонка.

В этом году в кинофоруме примут участие более 350 фильмов из 52 стран мира. Возможность пробиться на экраны США и Канады в этом году представилась трём российским картинам: «Солнцу» Александра Сокурова, картине Алексея Учителя «Космос как предчувствие», а также «Постельным сценам» Кирилла Серебренникова — 70-минутному видеофильму, состоящему из семи новелл.

Каждый год на смотре в Торонто собираются все сливки современного кинематографа. Помимо показа фильмов Ларса фон Триера, Михаэля Ханеке, Стивена Содерберга, которые уже принимали участие в других фестивалях, в Торонто состоятся мировые премьеры «Оливера Твиста» Романа Полански, «Зоны прилива» Терри Гиллиама, а также байопика Мартина Скорсезе, посвященного Бобу Дилану.

Посетить фестиваль собирались Энтони Хопкинс, Гвинет Пэлтроу, Терри Гиллиам, Пирс Броснан, Гай Риччи, Томми Ли Джонс, Морган Фримен и Роман Полански.

Фестиваль продлится с 8 до 17 сентября.

После встречи с Богартом я сразу отправился в аэропорт. Огромный, его трудно было не заметить - мне нравятся трудности. Зарегистрировавшись, я пошел в крошечный бар, где с легкостью можно было потратить оставшиеся до посадки двадцать минут и столько же долларов. Время - деньги. Но, если обычно за время платят мне, теперь плачу я, и считаю, что плачу недостаточно. Интересно устроен мир - берешь среднюю продолжительность жизни, считаешь, сколько в семидесяти годах часов - получаешь отпущенное тебе время. Отнимаешь от этой цифры время на сон и на развлечения - получаешь восемь рабочих часов. Теперь умножаешь восемь часов на свою заработную плату в час - получаешь отпущенные тебе деньги. Идешь в банк - получаешь всю сумму, за неделю пропиваешь, а потом умираешь. Вот вам и лучший способ борьбы с демографическим взрывом! За жизнь нужно платить, и не важно, прожил ты двадцать лет или семьдесят; главное - сумма, которую ты потратил. Время - деньги, и их с каждым днем все меньше.

Объявили посадку на рейс до Торонто, мне - туда. Двадцать долларов в баре - как раз та сумма, после которой хочется лететь. Если не в самолете, то хотя бы на пол. Торонто - замечательный город, куда ни ступишь - везде асфальт, первый город, где ведется борьба с зеленым цветом. Ни одного дерева в центре - обстругали ветви и превратили в столбы, перекрыли импорт огурцов, груш и зеленых яблок, переучили коров на грибы, перекрасили кленовый лист - в красный. Наверное, поэтому здесь чрезвычайно развито кино: голубой экран, небо, море, ни травы, ни кустов. Даже в Новый год вместо елки торонтцы наряжают небоскреб, на каждом этаже лампочка другого цвета - вот тебе и гирлянда...Само собой, американские доллары в Торонто запрещены.

Торонтский кинофестиваль сравнительно young, в Европе ему, пожалуй, соответствует Берлинский. Young people - new names, - я лечу и повторяю свой английский. В Торонто не живут англичане, но там каждый говорит по-английски. -Why у нас не так? Думаю о другом... на философские вопросы нет ответов.

Пересекаем воздушную границу - черту, за которой американский воздух становится канадским - и правда, здесь как-то легче дышать...Итак, 1976 год - первый кинофестиваль в Торонто, задуманный в качестве поддержки национального кино, кинофестиваль постепенно меняет свою концепцию, превращаясь в один из крупнейших кинофорумов. 1999 год - согласно опросу читателей газеты “Лос Анжелес Таймз”, кинофестиваль в Торонто - number 1 в мире. Именно здесь были открыты такие таланты, как Педро Альмодовар, Кшиштоф Кислевски, Аки Каурисмяки, Гес Ван Сэнт...Однако, фестиваль не забывал и о канадском кино, можно сказать, на его базе оно и выросло, став тем самым единственным деревом, которое было решено не вырубать, хотя, возможно, дело в том, что на этом дереве вечная осень...

Я закрываю фестивальный буклет. Интересный. Не такой интересный, как канадское кино. Я люблю канадское кино, очень жаль, что у нас его плохо знают. Например, Дени Аркан - это имя мало кому о чем-нибудь говорит. Между тем, “Иисус из Монреаля” - один из лучших фильмов восьмидесятых, удостоенный специального приза жюри в Каннах. Речь в нем о том, что Иисус и сейчас среди нас, мы просто его не замечаем. Его сразу не узнать - не раньше, чем его распнут. Так же и с самим фильмом...снятый десять лет назад, он до сих пор не вышел у нас на видео. Пройдет еще десять, и в памяти останется только Понтий Пилат, тот самый - из Монреаля.

Другое имя - Атом Эгоян, пару лет назад получил в Каннах приз за режиссуру. Уникальный режиссер, канадец армянского происхождения, он смешивает свою двухцветную кровь, создавая неспешные медитации, сравнивая жизнь с деревом: прошлое - это корни, будущее - листья. Листья желтеют и падают на землю - становятся корнями, из них поднимаются новые деревья и вот кругом уже стоит лес. Эгояну больше повезло - фильм-каннский лауреат “Славное будущее” все-таки вышел на лицензии. Удивительный фильм, способный изменить ваше представление о современном кино, другое дело - способны ли вы измениться?

Без сомнения, самым известным у нас канадским режиссером является Дэвид Кроненберг. На первый взгляд может показаться, будто в восьмидесятых этот режиссер снимал качественную фантастику, а в девяностых обратился к интеллектуальному кино. Это не так. Кроненберга на протяжении всего творчества интересует одна тема - перверсия, испорченность, насилие, то состояние, когда человек перестает быть человеком (“Муха”), когда у него появляются сверхчеловеческие способности (“Сканнеры”), когда новые технологии убивают в нем разум, превратив в машину (“Видеодром”), когда благодаря наркотикам он перестает различать пол (“Голый завтрак”), когда человек раздваивается, срастается с другим человеком (“Сиамские близнецы”), когда мир за окном начинает двигаться так стремительно, что ты перестаешь отличать красоту от уродства (“Автокатастрофа”), когда ты начинаешь принимать смерть за жизнь (“Экзистенц”).

Самолет садится на посадочную полосу, ему здесь уютно, есть время пообщаться с другими самолетами. Жизнь самолета короче человеческой - он падает всего один раз и уже никогда не поднимается. Самолет мстит за несправедливость - редко падает один. Падает со скоростью света - с этого света - на тот.

Кинофестиваль в Торонто для многих ограничивается знаменитым кафе “У Рика”, там можно встретиться со звездами, выпить пятизвездочный коньяк и посмотреть канадский фильм. Помню, в последний раз я смотрел там “Карту человеческого сердца”. Не уверен насчет производства, но действие фильма происходит в Канаде, в Монреале. В центре - любовь мальчика-эскимоса и девочки-полукровки, в центре - карта человеческого сердца, на которой время оставляет путанные следы.

- К “Рику”, - говорю я таксисту, мы трогаемся с места. В глазах таксиста читается уважение, но вместо этого я читаю вывески за окном. Минут через пять такси притормаживает у роскошной витрины. “У Рика” - необычное кафе, на его витрине представлен весь ассортимент, даже дымящийся кофе с булочкой. Рядом - скромный постер с Расселом Кроу, сегодня он гвоздь программы. Неожиданно рядом с его крупным именем вижу свое мелкое - значит, если он гвоздь, то я молоток.

Протягиваю таксисту десятку...похоже, он недоволен. Подумаешь, Роберт де Ниро! Я плачу ему за то, как он водит такси, а не за то, что им восхищается сексуальное большинство Америки. Америку в Канаде не любят, считают американцев тупыми. Там был недавно случай. Лукас хотел назвать свой новый фильм просто “Призрачная угроза”, без всяких “Звездных войн”. Провели социологический опрос, и оказалось, что шестьдесят процентов американцев считает, что режиссер за свою жизнь снимает всего один фильм. То есть, назови Лукас свой новый фильм просто “Призрачная угроза”, они начнут сомневаться в том, кто снял “Звездные войны”.

Рассказываю этот случай де Ниро. Жду...ничего не происходит. Машу рукой и направляюсь в кафе. Слышу осторожный смех из такси, с каждым шагом он нарастает. Если подождать еще полчаса, то де Ниро поймет, что смеялся над собой. Stupid Americans! Захожу в кафе и чувствую, как у меня за спиной идут конечные титры...

Ballets Russes: l'Humanité, L'égalité, la Fraternité, la Beauté

The rousing heart of the film is the reunion of more than one hundred Ballets Russes dancers from around the globe in New Orleans in 2000.

"Alicia Markova (now 93), Maria Tallchief, Irina Baronova and Tatiana Riabouchinska (two of the three celebrated "baby ballerinas"), Nathalie Krassovska, Yvonne Chouteau, Frederic Franklin, Mia Slavenska, Marc Platt and George Zoritch, to cite the most prominent -- add up to a chronicle of ballet in the 20th century."
This generation, Geller notes, was true pioneers. "In the 1930s, for a young person to go into ballet was like running away to join the circus."
What astonished Goldfine and Geller was the dedication of this generation of artists; dance simply coursed through their veins. After retiring, many, like Zoritch and Riabouchinska, continued to teach. Some, like the luminous, 85-year-old Baronova, are writing their memoirs. Others, like Platt, traded ballet for Broadway and the movies. A former member of the corps, Yvonne Craig, ended up as Batgirl on TV.

Ballets Russes Documentary Release
Vancouver, B.C.-based Critic/Historian Leland Windreich just forwarded the following information from Dayna Goldfine of Geller/Goldfine Productions regarding the release of the documentary on which they started production in early 2000:
"...it has just been picked up by a few distributors who plan to release it theatrically before ultimately distributing on DVD/VHS. In the U.S., Zeitgeist Films will distribute and has arranged for its theatrical premiere to take place in October at NY's Film Forum. In Canada, Capri Films will distribute and will likely do a theatrical release just after Zeitgeist's, in Australia Hopscotch Films will do the same."

Erte/Opera & Ballets Russes

LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA.- The Los Angeles County Museum of Art presents 'Erte/Opera & Ballets Russes/Dance: Theater Costume in LACMA's Collection,' on view through April 4, 2004. The Los Angeles County Museum of Art is one of the few institutions in the world with a sizable group of costumes from the historically and aesthetically important Ballets Russes (Russian Ballet). Featured in this exhibition are thirty spectacular couture costumes created for opera singer Ganna Walska by the renowned fashion and graphic designer Erte. Twenty-two ballet costumes designed by such artists as Henri Matisse, Natalia Goncharova, Sonia Delaunay, and Leon Bakst will also be presented. When the Ballets Russes troupe was introduced in Paris in 1909, it was the major force of an artistic revolution in dance and music that ran parallel to the radical changes in the plastic arts that Europe experienced in the first part of the 20th century. All the costumes and graphics, done during the late teens and 20s, are reflective of the period's fascination with things 'Oriental'-the fantasy, luxury, opulence, and exoticism Europeans found in the culture and arts from such distant lands as Persia, Russia, and China.

Erotic Ballets Russes Revisited

In 1895 Sergei Diaghilev, the founder and genius behind the Ballet Russes, was only 23, yet he already had a clearly defined sense of himself. With irony and panache he exclaimed: "I am, first, a great charlatan, though with dash, second a great charmer, third cheeky, fourth, a person with a lot of logic and few principles and, fifth, someone afflicted, it seems, with a complete absence of talent."

A century later, the legacy of Diaghilev and the circle of designers and dancers who worked with him continues to delight and intrigue, as is demonstrated by a major new exhibition at London's Barbican gallery and its accompanying catalogue and a substantially revised history of "Leon Bakst and the Ballets Russes" by Charles Spencer.

Собственно, она уже танцевала в Мариинском театре на знаменитом майском гала-концерте в присутствии звезд мирового политического бомонда (говорят, президент Путин заметил, что наконец-то все встало на свои места и нет никакого сомнения, кто есть "гордость русского балета"). Но тогда это был эскиз, генеральная репетиция возвращения (она танцевала короткую миниатюру Фокина "Лебедь"). В январе Лопаткина появится сначала в фокинской "Шехеразаде", а затем – в "Бриллиантах" из "Драгоценностей" Джорджа Баланчина. Это, что называется, возвращение по полной программе. Лопаткина долго готовилась к бою. ...
С выцветшей фотографии на Миллисент Ходсон смотрели артисты легендарных дягилевских Ballets Russes. Они были сняты в костюмах, гриме и позах балета Стравинского – Нижинского "Весна священная", с которым связан не только самый громкий скандал в искусстве XX века(побоище на премьере в Театре Елисейских полей и последующее безумие Нижинского), но и практически вся эволюция искусства ХХ века. ...
Но и это не всё. В январе в Мариинском театре начинается двухмесячный марафон, о котором все русские балетные артисты мечтают вот уже 15 лет – с тех пор как увидели уникальную видеозапись из Парижской оперы, на которой странный 38-летний человек в очках, непрерывно жующий огромный сэндвич, разучивает с восходящей суперзвездой Сильви Гиллем балет со странным названием In the Middle, Somewhat elevated. В искусстве (в балете, в частности) начиналась эпоха "неомодернизма". Странным человеком в очках был американский хореограф Уильям Форсайт, сегодня признанный единственным наследником Джорджа Баланчина, а через Баланчина – и наследником Мариуса Петипа, а значит – великой хореографической традиции Мариинского театра.
