Chapter 3: XForms User Interface Controls
User interface widgets collect user input and are responsible for providing a pleasant end-user experience when interacting with an application. The presentation and interaction exhibited by such widgets determines the look and feel of the user interface. When using markup languages such as XForms, such user interface widgets are created by special markup constructs called user interface controls in this book. We begin our technical overview of XForms with a tour of the available user interface controls. Each such control adds a specific type of functionality, and will be introduced alongside examples that motivate its use.

3.2 Common Aspects Of XForms Controls
XForms user interface controls are used to collect user input. The various XForms user interface controls provide a consistent markup interface to ease authoring. The XML markup is designed to be familiar to today’s HTML authors, while overcoming some of the idiosyncrasies found in HTML forms. This section presents a high-level design overview before presenting the syntactic details of the various user interface controls. In doing so, we will cover all aspects of common markup found in XForms user interface controls.

XForms Controls
View all the XForms controls in action, including on-the-fly validation, hints, help, date picker, menus, radio buttons, and checkboxes. This example also shows how to switch between different sections on a page with tabs, and how all the captured data is stored into an XML document.

IBM Task Modeler
An Eclipse-based tool for rapidly creating and analyzing models of human activity for DITA and user experience design.
What is IBM Task Modeler?
Task Modeler is an Eclipse-based software tool for modeling human activity as a hierarchy of tasks and related elements. An information architect can use it to design DITA (Darwin Information Typing Architecture) maps. A usability practitioner can produce either classic HTA (Hierarchical Task Analysis) diagrams or RAG (Roles and Goals) diagrams. The tool can be used in a workshop, during a field study, or at one's desk to rapidly create, explore, analyse, and share these models. Task Modeler is easy to learn, responsive in use, and adaptable to evolving practices. It creates attractive, expressive diagrams that inform and engage design stakeholders.
